The Madoc family of Warwickshire County has a long and illustrious history.  Madoc ap Lorum ap Lithel of Everley is found in records of about 1400 AD.  At that same time was Madoc ap Lor’ Vaghan of Meleurley; David ap Lithel ap Madoc ap Thomas of Melverley; and Madoc ap Llewelyn ap Lenaf and Tangwystyl dtr of Ienan Ffycht, son of Davit de Eggerley.  Everley, Meleurley, Melverley and Eggerley are different translations of the same town.

 

There were also Madocs in Wysham, Sweeney and Oswald in Warwickshire in the 1300s.  Of special interest is Thomas Madoke b.c. 1148 in Oswald who may have been an ancestor of this line.

NOTE:  William Mattocks b. 1771 may have been Thomas brother.  1841 census Coventry, Warwickshire, Eng.  William, age 70 in “House of Industry”.  Honora, age 70, head of house with Edward 35 & Thomas 30 who were “Ribbon Men.”    May have been aunt and uncle of my Thomas.  Thomas age 45, “Ribbon Weaver.”  Probable brother, JOHN, 44, “Ribbon Manufacturer.”  Probable brother, JOSEPH, 40, “Weaver.” 

 

John Mattocks was b. 1797 Coventry, and had children Martha b. 1824 and Thomas b. 1827 Coventry.

Joseph Mattocks was b. 1801 Coventry, married Mary __, and had children Joseph b. 1826, Sarah Jane b. 1829, Mark William b. 1832, Mary b. 1838 and Emily b. 1839.
