There are several Mattockses who only know they came from somewhere in Pennsylvania and who are exact matches to those who lived in Crawford Co., PA. Those who are a genetic distance of 2 or 3 from those who match were in Cumberland, Crawford & Mercer Counties, PA, Sussex Co., NJ, and in Hertfordshire & Liverpool, ENG.

There are a few who have tested in the Nordic (Viking) haplogroup. Everyone else is R1b covering most of Europe. These three are not a match, but all are in the Nordic haplogroup. Danielís is border-line J which is the northern Mediterranean countries: France, Austria, Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Albania and parts of Spain and Turkey. In middle ages, several Nordic tribes migrated south, some settling in Turkey and some in France. Researchers may want to lean heavily on LDS Family History Library microfilmed records from Europe.

Francis immigrated to the US from Devon Co., ENG, in the immediate southeast of Wales between infancy in 1795 and his marriage in Gasconade Co., MO, about 1820. That he went there as soon as he immigrated hints that Maddoxes already in the area may have written him or his parents to go there.

Although born in England, William spent most of his life in Scotland. His sons were stone cutters. This line immigrated to ME USA in the late 1800s, then the Carolinas. William b. 1815 ENG is a close match to James b.c. 1777 MD. Perhaps James was brother to William's unknown father.

This line of Mattockes lived for centuries in Warwickshire, ENG, and are still there. Mattockes have been found in Warwickshire since about the 14th century where some held prominent positions.

This is an exciting addition, since this is the line of a family in Cheshire, ENG which was Quaker back in its beginnings, and includes Joseph Maddock the founder of Quaker Wrightsboro in GA. The story of Joseph Maddock is on this website under "Famous Maddoxes." No DNA matches have been made to this line yet.

The first twelve markers were a match to the Edward/Cornelius and Alexander lines. But the 2nd set of markers now shows that he is not a match. This is an example of the importance of having enough markers tested. So now we have another line of Maddoxes. They seem to have lived as much in Scotland as in England.

Waddick was the Irish spelling for Maddick. There was a Madog monk in Ireland during the Middle Ages. It will be interesting to see how other Irish Waddicks or Maddicks match up with this new line.

Many Hattoxes have wondered if they were Mattoxes at one time. DNA results show a genetic distance of four from the closest Maddox, which is not very close. However, Hattoxes are welcome to continue in the Mattox project and perhaps match to other Hattoxes.
