Many members of this Abbeville group feel data supports they descended from the Cornelius of Charles Co., MD line, others are unclear and we all continue to search... thought to have migrated from England to MD to VA to SC to GA to AL... Please note other non-matching Maddox DNA lines also feel they descended from the Cornelius line as well, so this linage needs to be continously researched. We are very interested in adding more DNA lines to this chart, especially if you have solid data documenting your lineages. If you do match this line or have an interest in studying this line, we highly recommend reviewing this publication... www.maddoxgenealogy.com/book

This DNA line also feels data supports their descendent from Cornelius of Charles Co., MD.  As with all genealogical research, more needs to be done.  This specific data would suggest that Alexander of Somerset Co., MD, was related to Cornelius of Charles Co., MD. These two lines are only a genetic distance of one apart. It is believed that Alexander was the brother of Edward, And that their father was Thomas who immigrated from London to Jamestown, VA, in 1620. We have located three WILLIAMS descendants who are an exact match to this line. One of the Williams matches still lives in Wales. Back at the time of selecting last names (around time of Oliver Cromwell), did one branch of the family select Maddox and the other branch select Williams? David b. 1773 DE seems to be a near relative of Alexander, but we do not yet know how.

Those who had no idea who their oldest-known ancestor descended from have found some kind of relationship with immigrant John Maddox whose son lived in Goochland Co., VA. Those who are close but not an exact match may have descended from John's uncle or another of John's relatives back in England or Wales.  Among them were descendants from Charlotte Co., VA. Others who thought they were related only based on circumstantial evidence ~ Nathan and William of Bedford Co., VA, now have stronger proof. Still others who had always thought they descended from this popular line have found they are not, so now are able to focus their attention on other good possibilities. Several of John’s sons have never been researched.

Several who always thought, due to strong circumstantial evidence, that they descended from immigrant Samuel Maddox of St. Mary’s Co., MD, now have their final proof. This is a new and fascinating line of Maddoxes from France, as explained by descendant Mark Maddox b. 1844, who in a letter stated that his family came from France a hundred years earlier (3 generations) around 1767 at the end of the French and Indian War. He had planned to settle in Canada, but the British won the war, so he settled in the future United States on the York River. Mark’s grandfather, Samuel, is first found in Lancaste4r SC circa 1800 as is James; they are probably brothers. Some descendants migrated to GA and SC. William’s and Charles' line went to Lincoln Co., TN, and were probably brothers.

Adam and James Daniel are a genetic distance of one from each other. They are also a genetic distance of one from Elijah, but through different markers. James Daniel was in SC. The others were in TN, a natural migration pattern for that time. However, Elijah was born in VA. Did he go to TN to join nearby family members? James Daniel’s family ended up in MO. So did most of the others. Adam’s “ux” spelling pattern indicates descendancy from Alexander, but that is not the case according to DNA results. It is believed that Adam was brother to Nathaniel, Joseph, and Scholfield in Cocke Co., TN, at the same time, and that their father was Matthew, an older Maddox in that county.  Both Elijah and Matthew were strong leaders in the Baptist Church in TN.

Daniel Harrison Maddox was born in SC during the Revolutionary War. He was in the same county in GA (Gwinnett) as Revolutionary War veteran John G. Maddox. Also in Gwinnett Co. in 1820 were William, John, Fielding and Benjamin ~ all in Daniel's age category. We would like to find descendants of these lines willing to do the DNA test.

This is a new line from VA that migrated to both TN and KY. This is not a match to the Goochland Co., VA, line that so many have believed were related.

There have been three Aquilla's located in early US: Aquilla a cooper b. MD 1812 was found in Jefferson Co., WV 1880. Aquilla a cooper b. MD 1811 and died prob. Boone Co., MO. And this Aquilla whose DNA is not quite close enough to consider him related to the other two (#59137). However, they were both in Frederick/Washington Co., MD. Perhaps a retesting is in order.
